Powered Respirator Protective Suit (PRPS)

FAQ

The Respirex Powered Respirator Protective Suit (PRPS) is a one-piece, gas-tight chemical protective suit with a built-in powered respirator. It is designed for emergency response personnel working after a CBRN incident, typically to protect teams carrying out casualty decontamination. The suit is made from DuPont™ Tychem® TK and is fitted with a CleanAIR® Chemical 2F powered respirator and twin CBRN filters, giving combined body and respiratory protection in a single system.

The CleanAIR® Chemical 2F powered respirator is worn on a waist belt inside the suit. It draws air through two externally mounted CleanAIR® CBRN (A3B2E2K2P) filters and delivers a minimum of 160 litres per minute into the hood via a breathing tube. A Remote Display Device at the base of the visor shows a green light during normal operation and alerts the wearer with a flashing red light and audible alarm if airflow or battery level drops.

The battery provides one hour of operational use plus a further 15 minutes for decontamination. The Remote Display Device includes an elapsed time indicator, so the wearer can see how long they have been in the suit without needing to check an external timer. Working time in practice should also take account of local procedures for managing heat stress, particularly in warm conditions or during heavy physical work.

Yes. Because the PRPS uses a large hood and visor rather than a tight-fitting facemask, it can be worn by people with facial hair or glasses and there is no requirement for face-fit testing. This makes it easier to deploy across a wider group of responders and reduces the training and preparation needed before use.

Yes. The PRPS Training Suit is made from green PVC and is designed for repeated use with no re-testing required. It is supplied with rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, a charger and training filters that simulate the weight of the operational filters while protecting against dust and nuisance odours, so teams can practise donning, doffing and working in a realistic setup.
